Anti-Inflammatory Peptides
Anti-inflammatory peptides (AIPs) are generally short linear peptides consisted of 10-50 amino acids that are used to treat various inflammatory diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis. So far, the majority of AIPs discovered are endogenous peptides or derived from natural sources. Naturally derived anti-inflammatory active peptides can be extracted from herbal, mammalian, bacterial, and marine sources using enzyme hydrolysis, chemical hydrolysis and microbial fermentation methods. Moreover, some synthetic peptides were also explored to inhibit inflammatory responses.
In order to more effectively discover and study AIPs, several machine learning algorithms have been developed that can effectively predict peptide properties and their anti-inflammatory epitopes based on sequence profiles. AIPs resists excessive inflammatory responses by regulating inflammatory signaling pathways and inhibiting the secretion of inflammatory factors. The US FDA has approved several AIPs to prevent and control inflammation, indicating that they are likely to become new alternative therapies for the treatment of inflammation.
