Caspases are a class of protease enzymes, they have essential roles in programmed cell death. Caspases are also known as cysteine-aspartic proteases, cysteine aspartases, cysteine-dependent aspartate-directed proteases.

Caspases have other roles in programmed cell death, like: pyroptosis, necroptosis, PANoptosis. These forms of cell death are critical for organism protection from stress signals and pathogenic attack.
