Cerebellin (CER) is a neuromodulatory hexadecapeptide, which derives from the precursor protein precerebellin (Cbln1) and regulates the formation of synaptic structure in the central nervous system. It was originally discovered and isolated from rat cerebellum using HPLC techniques in 1984. CER is a neuropeptide that develops from precerebellin and contains four isoforms, Cbln1-4. It is a hexadecamer with the following primary amino acid sequence: NH(2)-Ser-Gly-Ser-Ala-Lys-Val-Ala-Phe-Ser-Ala-Ile-Arg-Ser-Thr-Asn-His-OH. CER enhances the secretory activity of human adrenal gland that is one of its functions.

It accomplishes this through exerting significant secretagogue impact on both cortex and medulla of human adrenals. The release of catecholamine was stimulated directly this peptide via dependent signaling pathway of the adenylate cyclase/protein kinase A. An indirect mechanism involving the adrenocortical stimulation of CER may be related to the release of catecholamines, resulting in consequently enhancing the secretion of steroid hormones. In the central nervous system, CER is widely dispersed and performs neuromodulatory actions such forming synaptic structures. Additionally, it is discovered in the peripheral tissues including pancreas and adrenal glands, where it modulates catecholamine secretion.
