Guanylin is a 15 amino-acid peptide, it is secreted by the goblet cells in colon. It is an agonist of guanylyl cyclase receptor GC-C, and regulates electrolyte and water transport in intestinal and renal epithelia. After receptor binding, guanylin will increase the intracellular concentration of cGMP, induce chloride secretion and reduce intestinal fluid absorption, final cause diarrhoea.
