Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a protein in nerve myelination process, it is the major constituent of the oligodendrocyte myelin and Sehwann cells in the central nervous system. MBP maintains the correct structure of myelin, and interacts with the lipids in myelin membrane.

The MBPs in the central nervous system are very diverse, including: several splice variants, post-translational modifications (phosphorylation, methylation, deamidation, and citrullination).
