Melittin is a basic peptide with 26 amino acids, it is the main component and major pain-producing substance of honeybee venom. Melittin is a toxic protein in bee venom, it can result in localized pain and inflammation, and also have moderate antibacterial and antifungal effect.

Melittin can create pain and destruct the tissue of intruders. It is not only expressed in venom gland, but also other tissues. Melittin is over-expressed in honey bees once infected with various pathogens.
