Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are metalloproteinases with calcium-dependent zinc-containing endopeptidases. They are also known as matrix metallopeptidases, matrixins. The MMPs belong to the large family of metzincin. The metzincin super-family have a highly conserved motif, which contain three histidines binding to zinc at the catalytic site, and a conserved methionine beneath the active site.
