Somatostatin is a cyclic peptide, it is also known as growth hormone-inhibiting hormone (GHIH). There are two active forms of this peptide: 14-amino-acid, 28-amino-acid. These two isoforms have considerable overlap in activity, but differ in effecting locations. It can inhibit the secretion of other hormones, like somatotropin, glucagon, insulin, thyrotropin, and gastrin.
